The TikTok Story Nobody Talks About

Welcome to Created, the newsletter that'll never "go dark" on you. Not even for 12 hours (cough...TikTok...cough). Here’s what we got today:

  • What will happen to TikTok now that Trump is President

  • The TikTok story nobody is talking about: CapCut's Future

  • MoistCr1TiKaL and Ludwig merge Esports team with Shopify

Why CapCut is TikTok's Secret Weapon...And What Will Happen

Everyone’s talking about the TikTok ban, but what about CapCut?

CapCut is the editing app owned by TikTok and used by over 500 million users.

It also went dark during TikTok’s 12-hour U.S. shutdown — and it's fate is still uncertain.

Here's why that's a bigger deal than most people realize:

TikTok is back...for now.

On Monday, President Trump signed an executive order delaying the ban for 75 days to allow for a sale to an American company.

But CapCut did not come back online until Tuesday, signaling just how tied its future is to TikTok’s.

Rivals make moves

  • Instagram Launched Edits: Hours after TikTok's ban, IG announced Edits, its CapCut alternative with 10-minute video, AI tools, and more.

TikTok cozies up To Trump

Yes, Trump was the first to push for TikTok's ban years ago. But now he's their savior.

At an event sponsored by TikTok, attendees found MAGA swag like Trump-hugging stickers and cocktail napkins quoting Trump's praise of the app.

On his first day back, Trump discussed two possibilities for TikTok:

  • He’s open to Elon or another American company buying it.
  • He also hinted at the U.S. itself owning half of the app, essentially becoming a joint venture with ByteDance.

Our take: this is wild. For so many reasons.

First off, tech companies never lean into one political party this hard.

When I worked at YouTube, we made every effort to work with both parties to be bipartisan.

But hey, TikTok is fighting for its life. Suddenly all bets are off.

Second, there's a world where TikTok gets saved but CapCut still goes under.

Now, you may be thinking - so what? TikTok is the golden goose. But hear me out.

CapCut is TikTok's oxygen. It helps them control culture.

Yes, most editing apps have the same basic features like trimming and filters.

But when a platform has a popular editing app (like TikTok with CapCut and now Instagram with Edits)....well, holy shit.

They can push songs, dance trends, and other templates for you to edit your content with.

Ever wonder why the same songs don't trend on different platforms?

It's because each platform wants to say they started the trend.

Originality is the currency of any social platform.

The Next 75 Days

Expect Instagram to launch even more tools within their editing app to help creators take part of trends.

Repurposing old TikToks to IG is nice. But replacing TikTok as the center of internet culture?

That's the real prize Instagram is after.

MoistCr1TiKaL & Ludwig Merge Esports Teams to Stay in the Game

Two of gaming’s biggest names, Ludwig Ahgren and Charles “MoistCr1TiKaL” White Jr., are trying to keep Esports alive.

Their team, Moist Esports, is merging with Shopify Rebellion, making them co-owners of Shopify’s Esports organization.

Backstory

Since 2021, Moist Esports has had $4.2 million in losses. Even Ludwig’s backing it as a co-owner in 2023 couldn’t turn things around.

“I love this space, even though it’s infamous for being impossible to make profit in,” White Jr. admitted. “You know what? I’d do it all over again.”

It’s not just Moist Esports feeling the strain. Streamer Disguised Toast revealed similar challenges with his own team and burning through cash.

Where's The Money?

Esports is in a tough spot because of:

  • High player salaries.
  • Shrinking sponsorships.
  • Limited revenue streams.

This merger gives Shopify Rebellion and Moist Esports a chance to pool resources, widen their merchandise efforts, and create a foundation for the future of Esports

Quote: “Joining forces allows us to field stronger teams, invest more in fans, and create a more resilient organization,” Shopify Rebellion Founder Jeremy Steeves aid.

Our Take

Esports isn’t dead — far from it with projections hitting 600 million viewers this year. But the path to profitability remains tricky.

Without the big sponsors or broadcasting deals of traditional sports, merch sales have become a critical revenue stream for Esports organizations like 100 Thieves.

It’s a model Ludwig and MoistCr1TiKaL are likely to lean even more heavily into this model as they shape the future of Shopify Rebellion.

For creators, the takeaway is clear: building a sustainable business means aligning your strategy to your audience, not just following the traditional playbook.
